Personal Coaching Program for Business Writers

(Personal Coaching)

Coaching Outline

Business writing is a unique style of writing. In requires the writer to pay attention to clarity, conciseness, organizational formats, grammar, visual appeal and tone. Business writing differs dramatically from academic writing; yet many writers still try to apply the outdated writing rules they learned in school to their business correspondence.

This leaves them with documents that are inappropriate for today’s business world. Not only can this lessen a professional’s image, it can also impact the writing style of his or her whole department. In addition, poor writing can cause vital information or ideas to be lost or overlooked.

Staff could take a one-, two- or three-day workshop to upgrade themselves, but they may not have the time. Outlined below is an individualized training alternative—The Persolalized Coaching Program for Business Writers.

The Program is a two-part process designed to provide people with a confidential assessment of their business writing skills and to offer them personalized coaching. We specialize in reports, business cases, proposals, letters, speeches and e-mails.

Stage 1—The Assessment

The Assessment examines the current writing skills of the participant and provides a written report on areas such as clarity, organization, appearance, tone, grammar and overall impression.

To conduct the assessment, participants are required to submit ten pages of business writing samples. (Participants may remove figures and confidential information.) Participants will also be asked to complete the following documents:

  • A 20-sentence grammar quiz
  • A brief writing personality profile
  • An editing assignment

The cost for the "Assessment" is $500 and includes the confidential written report, and a copy of Jane Watson’s book, Business Writing Basics.

Stage 2—The Coaching Package

Participants who require special coaching to update their grammar and writing styles may opt to follow through with the Coaching package.

The confidential Coaching is completed over a two-month period. The first session involves a two-hour meeting with Jane Watson and the participant. On three additional occasions during the coaching period, the participant must submit 5 more pages of written materials (20 pages in total). Each submission will be followed-up by an in-bound, 30-minute phone session at a mutually agreed-upon time. After each of the four sessions, the participant will be sent materials to study and short exercises to complete pertaining specifically to his or her learning needs at that time.

In addition, participants may also contact Ms. Watson for advice on specific, work-related writing projects.

The $1,000 cost for the Coaching includes the copies and mailing of any other necessary material, the hot-line service and the phone coaching sessions.
