Participants learn and practice advanced techniques for planning, opening, executing, and concluding their presentations in a way that engages their audiences fully.

Participants complete a brief pre-workshop questionnaire and come to the workshop with a work-related topic to use in practice exercises.

Defining the Presentation: The Big Picture

  • The 4 types of presentations
  • Defining your presentation outcomes
  • Audience vs. Presenter expectations: The top 5 fears for each group
  • Why even experienced presenters often neglect the big picture from an audience perspective
  • Completing an audience analysis

Planning the Presentation: The Preparation Outline

  • Creating a general and specific purpose
  • Identifying the central idea/key message
  • Determining the main points and sub-points
  • Identifying the main points of the introduction and conclusion

Organizing the Presentation: Opening, Middle, Close

  • The opening: previews
  • The middle: previews, transitions, splashes, appeals, links, signposts, and internal summaries
  • The close: restatements and final summary

Practicing the Presentation: Delivery Style

  • 10 opening techniques
  • 10 closing techniques
  • 10 techniques for eye contact, posture, gestures, poise
  • 10 techniques for vocal delivery volume, pace, articulation, tone, pronunciation, pauses, inflections

Visual Aids for the Presentation

  • 5 mistakes even experienced presenters make
  • Visual do’s and don’ts
  • The importance of audience-based pre-checks

  • Guidelines for graphics and power point
