  • Identifying your primary and secondary readers
  • Matching your objectives to your readers’ needs
  • Knowing what you need to know about how readers read
  • Utilizing proven strategies to help readers read more effectively
  • The elements of making your document reader friendly

Writing Clearly

  • Intranet writing versus standard business writing
  • Avoiding unnecessary words
  • Choosing between active and passive voice
  • Using the most effective verbs to obtain a positive response
  • Lists versus narrative writing
  • Applying the 7 rules for clarity

Deciding What Information to Include

  • Determining the needs of the users
  • Identifying key activities
  • Establishing clear accountability for managing key activities
  • Evaluating risks, consequences and impacts of activities

Creating Logical and Coherent Documents

  • Understanding the difference between “archive-able” documents on the intranet and “chunked” ones
  • Using visual and textual cues to guide the reader

Testing Documents for Accuracy and Readability

  • Usability testing
  • Readability stats

METHODS TO BE USED:

Participants will be actively involved in exercises and activities designed to develop and improve their business writing in terms of both print and electronic documents
